The latest buyback comes as crime has been dropping rapidly in Baltimore, including gun crime.
Archbishop Lori said the mergers will enable the remaining parishes to ‘focus on mission and ministry, as opposed to leaking roofs, crumbling walls, and failing electrical and plumbing systems.’
Parishes in the city have faced sustained challenges in recent years, the archdiocese said.
After the sealed hearing on Monday at U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland, Archbishop Lori said he was 'deeply grateful to the victim-survivors for their courage today [and] moved by their heartrending experience.'
The 22 named insurers have contracted with the archdiocese at various times since 1956, the filing said.
Father Morlino had been pastor at St. Benedict for more than 30 years.
Effective Oct. 1, new law will allow a victim of child sex abuse to sue private entities for up to $1.5 million if he or she can show the organization failed to properly respond to sexual abuse that occurred under its watch.
The report alleges that Church officials attempted to cover up many of the abuses by protecting predator priests and dismissing complaints.
