Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted on three charges of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter for the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, was sentenced to 22 ½ years in prison on Friday.
Archbishop Hebda called on the community to “pause and pray, particularly during this time of already heightened tension due to the Chauvin trial.”
Chauvin is being charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter for the death of George Floyd. Floyd, a Black man, died on May 25 in Minneapolis after he was restrained by Chauvin during an attempted arrest.

Across the U.S., many Catholics are trying to witness to peace on all sides of protests and riots following the police-related killings of African Americans.
On May 20, the bishops of Minnesota said they would allow parishes to resume public Masses at one-third of church capacity on May 26, in defiance of the statewide order.
The archbishop’s remarks came one day after a historic decision that Minnesota’s six dioceses would permit parishes to resume public Masses amid the coronavirus pandemic, and to flout statewide pandemic orders.
The archbishop spent months getting to know the Twin Cities archdiocese as its apostolic administrator and listening to the concerns of the flock.
