COMMENTARY: The somber 20-year anniversary was met this year with another somber development — the American withdrawal from Afghanistan and its return to the Taliban. And it need not have been.
Afghans and Afghan-Americans have found themselves caught up in a national catastrophe due to the U.S. withdrawal of military and civilian contractors that led to the Taliban’s takeover.
Once upon a time, everyone recognized the importance of marking a shared history as a nation and a people. That consensus is progressively eroding.
After the attack on our country I left Islam and held religion in disdain. But against the odds, I would come to learn that God became flesh and dwells among us.
