In February, the Vatican announced that synod organizers invited 300 parish priests from around the world to meet in Rome from April 28 to May 2 in an effort to shape synodal discussions.
One of the cardinal’s main concerns is how the Synod on Synodality is being conducted at the universal level, beginning with the initial assembly at the Vatican in October 2023 and culminating later this year with a final assembly in October.
Several developments at the Oct. 4-29 session point to this objective.
A talk given to the Latin Mass Society of Arlington on Nov. 8 offers a look at the Oct. 4-29 general assembly of the Synod of Bishops, what it signifies and where the process might go from here.
The two bishops, who were originally considered voting members of the 16th Ordinary Synod of Bishops, will no longer be present in the Paul VI Hall for the final vote on the synthesis document at the end of this month’s assembly.
Both Pope Francis and Cardinal Mario Grech, secretary general of the Synod of Bishops, have emphasized the importance of prayer in the synodal process.
In a March 20 announcement, the USCCB said the five priests consist of four Latin-rite priests and one Eastern Catholic priest, at the request of the Vatican.
For some cardinals, the synod will be a kind of semi-public audition for the 266th successor of St. Peter
