About Us

Our mission is to provide a perspective on the news of the day as seen through the eyes of the Magisterium. We assist Catholics in engaging the culture with confidence in the saving and sanctifying Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The National Catholic Register was founded in 1927 by Msgr. Matthew Smith of the Archdiocese of Denver. In the inaugural issue, Msgr. Smith wrote:

“If you like a Catholic paper with snap, vigor, courage, here it is. If you like one that is easy to read, here it is. If you like one that will always be loyal to the Church and has no selfish axe to grind, here it is.”

After more than 90 years, the National Catholic Register continues to provide its readers with timely news reporting from across the United States, from the Vatican, and from around the world. Today, we take Msgr. Smith’s words and put them into action.

The Register is read by tens of thousands of active lay Catholics along with over 800 priests, 160 bishops, 40 archbishops and 30 Vatican officials.

The National Catholic Register and NCRegister.com have become America’s most complete and faithful Catholic news source. In addition to the news that its readers need and expect, the Register also includes edifying feature articles on such topics as the Culture of Life, Catholic education, books, arts & entertainment, Catholic travel, and its award-winning In Person interview series. It is published biweekly, 26 issues per year.

History of the National Catholic Register

As of February 1, 2011, the National Catholic Register is owned and operated by EWTN. Founded in 1981, EWTN Global Catholic Network is available in over 160 million television households in more than 140 countries and territories. With its direct broadcast satellite television and radio services, AM & FM radio networks, worldwide shortwave radio station, Internet website and publishing arm, EWTN is the largest religious media network in the world.

The National Catholic Register grew out of the Archdiocese of Denver’s Register, which began in 1924 and whose first national edition appeared on Nov. 8, 1927. Under the leadership of Msgr. Matthew Smith, the Register System of Newspapers was developed, eventually producing 35 diocesan editions, reaching its highpoint in the 1950s with a combined national and diocesan circulation of over 700,000.

In 1970, California businessman Patrick Frawley purchased the declining newspaper and later moved it to Los Angeles.

In 1995, a group of investors, along with the Legionaries of Christ, saved the newspaper from closing and moved it to New England.

On February 1, 2011, the National Catholic Register was purchased by EWTN.
