‘City on a Hill’

FRANCISCAN UNIVERSITY OF STEUBENVILLE, Feb. 26 — Archbishop J. Michael Miller, secretary of the Vatican’s Congregation for Catholic Education, will be a featured speaker at a major symposium on Catholic education next month. Franciscan University will host the “A City on a Hill” symposium on the purpose and identity of Catholic higher education from April 19 to 22. Archbishop Miller, former president of the University of St. Thomas in Houston, will give one of the symposium’s four keynote addresses. The other featured speakers are Mario Mauro, vice president of the European Parliament; Jesuit Father Michael Garanzini, president of Loyola University, Chicago; and Holy Cross Father John Jenkins, president of the University of Notre Dame.


Flying South

NAPLES (FLA.) DAILY NEWS, Feb. 22 — Ave Maria School of Law plans to relocate to Florida from Ann Arbor, Mich., in 2009. Some faculty had opposed the proposal that the law school join its sister institution, Ave Maria University, in Florida. But the law school’s board of governors last month voted in favor of the move.


Co-Ed by Fall

THE CONCORD MONITOR, Feb. 23 — St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., has announced plans to convert some dorms into co-ed facilities starting next fall. About 10% of students will live in these buildings, which the school says will be more like apartment complexes than traditional dormitories: The sexes will be partitioned by separate locked entrances. Administrators at the 118-year-old Benedictine institution also said the move will help it serve a growing and increasingly female student body. Some critics questioned that motive, charging that the school is capitulating to secular demands and downplaying its Catholic identity.
