The death of a loved one is a very personal thing. I have been affected very deeply by the Easter Sunday death of my friend and mentor Mother Angelica. But I’m not the only one.
As you can see throughout this special issue of the Register — from the obituary on page one to the essays in our commemorative section on pages 11-14, as well as the piece on Mother’s spiritual daughters on page B1 — Mother’s life affected so many millions of people. Add to that the notes of condolence I have personally received and the many more we have received at EWTN, and you start to get an idea of what Mother — like Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen, who took the Catholic faith to the airways before her — meant to the Church in the United States and beyond.
A wonderful by-product in the days following her death was that the mainstream media, which often caricatured or outright ignored the “TV nun,” rightly covered the story of her passing. And when the mainstream media’s eye is trained on the beautiful moments in the Catholic Church, there is the opportunity in the world for an encounter with Christ, a moment of conversion.
