Looking Ahead by Looking Back

Publisher's Note

In just a few days, we will embark on our Lenten journey for another year.

To help us prepare for the 40-day period of prayer, penitence and almsgiving that lies ahead, we can look back at the significant events of last month for an infusion of inspiration.

As you see, we devote special coverage in this issue of the Register to the overwhelming support for the culture of life at events surrounding the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize abortion in the United States. The March for Life in Washington brought together a record crowd of 650,000 participants, and the Walk for Life West Coast drew 50,000 people, also its largest number. Similar events in Denver, Dallas, San Diego and St. Augustine, Fla., attracted considerable support.

In addition, a pro-marriage rally in Paris, a city thought to be indicative of Europe’s lukewarm Christianity, drew 800,000 supporters.

The energy, resolve and perseverance embodied there and throughout the United States should fortify us for our road ahead in Lent — and in the year that lies before us.

God bless you!
