As we mark the 40th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to legalize abortion in all nine months of a woman’s pregnancy, we also mark the 40th anniversary of the very public condemnation of it: the annual March for Life in Washington, which will be held Jan. 25.
This year’s march signifies the symbolic passing of the torch from founder Nellie Gray, who died in August 2012, to Jeanne Monahan (see page 1 story), who took over as president of the March for Life Education and Defense Fund after Gray’s passing.
While our counterparts in the secular press continue to ignore or downplay the magnitude of this annual event, the Register and EWTN will again bear witness to it, with live coverage online and via radio and television. We will have writers and bloggers at events not only in Washington, but also across the country.
As Princeton professor Robert George said in a 2009 Register interview regarding public awareness of the pro-life movement, "It speaks well for my country that, despite our terrible policy of abortion that has been imposed on us by seven unelected and unaccountable judges, we have built and sustained … the most powerful pro-life movement in the world."
