His name is Daniel Wani. He's a Sudanese man who currently lives in New Hampshire and is traveling to his home country on a desperate mission to save his pregnant wife who has been sentenced to death for marrying him, a Christian.
His wife's name is Meriam Yehya Ibrahim Ishag. She is eight months pregnant and sentenced to death by the Sudanese government for being a Christian. You see, she is guilty of apostasy for the crime of converting to Christianity even though she was raised by her Christian mother. Her father was Muslim and that's all that legally matters.
“We gave you three days to recant but you insist on not returning to Islam," the judge told her. "I sentence you to be hanged.” The death penalty is supposed to take place after she gives birth.
She reportedly told the judge: “I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy.”
Dani's brother Gabriel told ABC News that the family is praying for a miracle. “I’m just praying for God," he reportedly said. "He can do a miracle.”
There's much discussion about this everywhere. The politically minded are quick to point out that the U.S. federal government has seemed weak in the face of such evil. Some see the story as a reason to disregard religion in its entirety because, you know, secular governments never killed people. But I don't think this story is a launching point for more points of view. This family needs prayers. Pray please.
