Register Radio: Catholicism in the South & Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Correspondent Dana Lorelle and Monsignor Stanley Deptula

Today on Register Radio, Register correspondent Dana Lorelle spoke about her recent article on the rise of the Catholic Church in the South.

Lorelle spoke about the rise of the Church in places such as Charlotte, Atlanta, and elsewhere and the phenomenal growth the Church is experiencing there.

She provided statistics on the Church's growth, discussed the plans for a regional seminary west of Charlotte, and spoke about the unique flavor of Catholicism in the South.

"Catholicism in the South is much more Scripture-based," said Lorelle. "If you don't know your faith in the South, you're going to be won over by Protestants."

Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

In our second half, Monsignor Stanley Deptula, executive director of the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Foundation, spoke about the Vatican announcement declaring Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen "venerable," what that means, and what the next steps are in the cause for canonization process.

Monsignor Deptula spent a good deal of time detailing the most promising alleged miracle which will be investigated by the Vatican. That case involved the birth of James Fulton Engstrom, to Bonnie and Travis Engstrom, on September 16, 2010. The Engstroms prayed fervently to Archbishop Sheen after she delivered a stillborn son. The baby had no pulse for 61 minutes after he was born. As doctors prepared to declare the time of death, his heart began beating.
