Garden of Pain — and Healing

Oakland Catholics have a tangible expression of their Church’s anguish over the devastation caused by clerical sexual abusers.

Bishop Allan Vigneron of Oakland authorized the creation of a rooftop garden honoring victims of sexual abuse atop Oakland’s new Cathedral of Christ the Light.

Here’s what Bishop Vigneron said about the garden at its Oct. 11 dedication:

““To the hurts of so many innocents, we preferred the darkness to the light. And for that, I again make heartfelt apologies to all victim survivors. As it says on the plaques at the entries, ‘We remember and we affirm: never again.’”
