Faith for Fighting

Faith helps ill children heal.

There’s been no shortage of research showing a correlation between regular religious practice and faster healing in ill adults. Now there’s a study showing that spiritually active kids tend to do better fighting afflictions, too. Dr. Barry Nierenberg, associate professor of psychology at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., made the finding after studying a group of young people, aged 6 to 20, who were undergoing hemodialysis for renal disease. He reported that children who agreed strongly with statements such as “I am sure that God cares about me” and “God has a plan for me” presented better health markers than less spiritual study participants.
