Catholics Oppose New Law Allowing Kids' Vaccines Without Parental Permission (2041)

California governor authorized the measure on Oct. 9; children as young as 12 can receive vaccinations and other medications to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, including HPV, without their parents' notification.

LOS ANGELES (CNA)—Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez joined the California Catholic Conference in criticizing a new law that allows 12-year-olds to receive vaccinations against sexual diseases without their parents’ permission.

“Parents bear the first responsibility for their children’s physical and spiritual well-being. This new law, however, bypasses parental involvement, wisdom and guidance,” said Archbishop Gomez in his Oct. 10 response to Gov. Jerry Brown’s decision to sign the vaccination proposal into law.

The new law, which Brown authorized on Oct. 9, allows children as young as 12 to receive vaccinations and other medications to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, including the human papilloma virus (HPV).

Archbishop Gomez called the governor’s move a “serious erosion of parental rights in California,” saying children are “not mature enough to think through the consequences of complicated medical decisions.”

“As a result of this law, children will now face these decisions without parental guidance — and likely under pressure from adults and corporate interests that have financial and other motives to promote these medications,” he noted.

“Rather than excluding parents, our government should be working to support and assist them in making the best decisions possible for their children, especially when serious medical and moral issues are at stake.”

Edward Dolejsi, executive director of the bishops’ public-policy work at the California Catholic Conference, said he was “puzzled and disappointed” by Brown’s decision to remove parental oversight from childrens’ STD vaccination choices.

Dolejsi explained that he was puzzled in light of the governor’s cautious approach to other matters involving children and parents.

“On the same day he signed A.B. 499, the governor signed a ‘first-in-the-nation’ law to prevent children under 18 years of age from using tanning beds,” the conference director pointed out.

“Just a month earlier, on Sept. 7, 2011, he vetoed a bill to mandate helmets on underage youth, expressing his concern about the ‘seemingly inexorable transfer of authority from parents to the state,’ saying, ‘I believe parents have the ability and responsibility to make good choices for their children.’”

“In this case, it appears that by signing A.B. 499, the governor abandoned the principle of parental responsibility he so eloquently stated earlier,” Dolejsi observed.

William May, chairman of Catholics for the Common Good, told CNA in September that the HPV vaccination of teenagers would likely end up squandering resources, as well as undermining families.

As May explained, 73% of teenagers who sign up to receive the Gardasil vaccine never complete the series of three shots, which must be received over the course of three months at a cost of $120 each.

Recall this Corrupt Governor Now!!!
Start the Campaign to recall this Governor who sold out children’s health to the Drug companies!

Do I read this right??  He won’t sign a law for helmets which have no negative effect but a slight bruise to their ego because they don’t look cool but signs a law for injecting children w/ drugs that may or may not have a negative affect on them?  I am not crying autism here but my kids all seem to get the worst knots in their muscles and fevers from any shot they receive.  I am sure the same is true for children in CA.  And where/when would these take place?  In that they cannot drive themselves to the doctor, I imagine it will happen in schools.

Will this be enforced in Catholic/Christian/private schools?  Amazing.

First, who is going to pay for their $300 shots?  Second, what happens if one of these kids has a severe reaction?

I wonder what people would say if and when the children get these diseases and the law was not in effect: “Where was the state to protect them?” Why not ban polio vaccines or others then? Parental choice here might mean children’s death!

If the shots cost $120 times 3, I don’t think we’ll see a long line of teenagers outside the clinic door.

The government should not be allowed to dictate what decisions we as parents make in our childrens best interests except of course, in the instance where parents are physically, mentally or emotionally abusing their children - then and only then can I understand the government stepping in - and most times they don’t…..

I agree with Archbishop Gomez and I think this is a significant medical decision that cannot be made by a child, it is called uniformed consent. I find this conclusion by the state to be a direct assault to my parental authority. You cannot make a ignorant comparison with the polio vaccine here. Please do the research instead of flippantly disregarding the serious side effects this vaccine carries. This HPV vaccine is a dangerous cocktail that carries multiple health risks once given, and it has not been properly tested. It has never been proven to prevent deaths from HPV, other than the direct maiming and deaths caused by this triple vaccine.  I am a Catholic mother of 3 daughters and I would never consider giving them this toxic laden triple vaccination to any of them. I don’t need the state to usurp my parental position to make medical decisions. We have absolutely no legal recourse if injury were to ever occur. On another note Molly’s Bill, only dogs have legal protection from vaccine injury now. How backwards is that?  California cares for dogs more than our children.

What a sick govt. we have in the US..It is getting too big for its britches!

I was reading Teresa Tomeo’s take on this: http://teresatomeo.com/take-it-from-teresa/vaccine-for-girls-without-a-parental-consent.html and between the two of these articles I just can’t help but be amazed.  How in the world can people think a teen can make this kind of decision about a vaccine that has killed people and permanently disabled them?  Why is it that society swallows anything that supposedly makes the consequences of s-x go away.  We can try to pretend, but s-x has consequences and it is like playing with fire if it is not in the right context.  Giving this vaccine can be dangerous and does not even do what they say. You still can get HPV - it does not cover all kinds.  And giving it is saying “Here is one more reason to say yes to s-x.”  To try to pretend teens will think it is just for someday later in their life is a fallacy.

THIS MUST STOP!! PLease support legislations now- to stop this bill.
