It is not every day that a celebrity does something incredibly selfish and stupid that endangers the lives of others and then is celebrated for it.
Ok. You are right. It is every day.
Thought experiment. Imagine a certain celebrity gets into a public drunken fight with a girlfriend, storms out of the restaurant and while massively inebriated drives a car into some some poor undeserving chap. Imagine the fallout from a certain male celebrity with some defective variant of Christian belief executing the above tomfoolery. The media would be equally relentless and vicious. N'est-ce pas?
Now imagine that the perp is not a drunk with some Christian leanings but something else entirely.
Imagine for a moment that our perp is a popular lesbian. What might the coverage be then?
This is, of course, no hypothetical exercise.
Recently, a prominent lesbian had a fight with her "partner" and got into a car under the serious influence of alcohol and crashed her car into someone. And she was not a little drunk, she was a lot drunk testing over twice the legal limit.
So what is the coverage of this heinous and irresponsible act? To sum up, "Isn't she lovely?"
The media is not obsessed over her selfish and dangerous behavior. No. What are we to take away from this teachable moment?
"Doesn't she have a lovely mugshot?"
Some sample headlines.
"Celebrity Chef Cat Cora's glamorous mugshot released after DUI ..."
"Cat Cora poses for pretty mugshot photo"
Cat Cora Mugshot: Chef Strikes Pretty Pose After DUI Arrest ...
As I have long suspected, it is good to be drunk, it is good to drive, and it is good to be a lesbian. But I never knew until now how good it is to be all three.
Takeaway. It is ok to be a selfish out-of-control drunk as long as you are the right kind of people.

I think you’re a little off here. I actually clicked through to the links and the tone of the actual articles is a slightly bemused, “celebrities aren’t like us” because you see..the reason for the pretty mug shot is that she got to come back 11 days later to have it taken. They’re pretty much mocking her. And if yOu read the food news blogs the judgment is even harsher..food tv personalities have lost gigs for a lot less than this.
I have to agree, Pat, I think you’re a tad off on this one. She likely isn’t getting the “Isn’t the mugshot pretty?” treatment because she’s gay, it’s probably because she’s famous. We’ve all seen how famous folks get away with a lot more because of the name recognition, and it sounds like this is just another case of that. I don’t think gay people get away with any more crime than the general population.
@Nancy & @Christina,
Even if those articles are mocking her, the point I see is that the original articles about the event got no real press. Consider how Mel Gibson is in the national news for weeks every time he does something stupid, which never(?) involves hurting someone (thank God).
I agree, Pat.
This is a double standard, indeed.
Pretty is as pretty does.
A lesbian, in practice, lies about her sexual identity, then drinks to not remember. The lesbian drinks to get drunk, and so becomes a threat to every citizen. Drinking alcoholic beverages is for enjoyment and not for expressing one’s lack of control. You do well to point out to the media their lack of comprehension. How is her victim?
This woman needs prayer. And so, alas, do the four innocent children she and her partner have manufactured using an anonymous sperm donor and IVF, in which each woman carried the *other* woman’s child in her womb:

(But, hey, married heterosexual couples manufacture IVF children before going on drunken rampages all the time, so no worries, right? The kids will be fine. At least, that’s what all the gay “marriage” supporters will say.)
Just from what I observed,(correct) political identification seems to cut more slack in the press than gender indentification.
Erin,

Yes, that’s true, and in greater numbers. What’s your point? In fact, I missed the point of this entire article.
When did I last read, “Recently, a prominent heterosexual had a fight with her “husband”...”?
Oh yes, never. Prejudiced much?
If we can’t have spouses, must even our partners get scare-quotes?
“some defective variant of Christian belief”
What would that be? Westboro Baptist? Mormon? Methodist? Tridentine?
I’m confused as to why you brought up her sexual orientation in this article. The articles you used as support ignored this woman’s crime in favor of talking about her looks and celebrity status, not that she happens to be a lesbian. Next time maybe you should focus on the actual problem, not just your own disapproval of her personal life.

So what’s new? : you never “get it”
