It is a sad day in American history. So many lives lost.
But I see hope in the scores of Americans who visibly oppose Roe v. Wade and work to make America pro-life.
Like the 12-year-old from Colorado we featured.
And the countless others we profile regularly in the pages of the Register and online here.
Many people are marching and participating in other pro-life events this weekend, including online, to show their support for life.
See our coverage here.
And stay tuned on Monday as we report from D.C.’s March for Life.
I am reminded of some of the bold voices who speak for the voiceless:
“The right of the child is equal to the right of the mother’s life. The doctor can’t decide; it is a sin to kill in the womb.” ~St. Gianna Beretta Molla, pro-life mother and doctor
“The greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion, which is war against the child. The mother doesn’t learn to love, but kills to solve her own problems. Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want.” ~Blessed Mother Teresa
“To be Catholic means to be pro-life.” So said then-Bishop J. Peter Sartain (now archbishop of Seattle) at last year’s March for Life.
“Let me tell you why I believe abortion is the crucial issue of our age. First, because abortion, too, is about living within the truth. The right to life is the foundation of every other human right. If that right is not inviolate, then no right can be guaranteed. Or to put it more bluntly: Homicide is homicide, no matter how small the victim.” ~Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver
“Love of justice, the protection of life from conception to its natural end, respect for the dignity of every human being are to be upheld and witnessed, even against the current: The fundamental ethical values are the common patrimony of universal morality and the basis of democratic coexistence.” ~Pope Benedict XVI
“To be actively pro-life is to contribute to the renewal of society through the promotion of the common good.” ~Pope John Paul II
And as Dr. Seuss put it: “A person’s a person, no matter how small.”
Who are your pro-life heroes, and what are your favorite quotes for life? How are you praying for and working to support life?
There is so much work to do to help the unborn. But we can do it. Together.

TRUSTING IN GOD’S WISDOM
There once was a man who proclaimed he did not believe in God. “God could never love anyone and if he existed, I would insist that he prove it to me”, he often proclaimed to friends. “God takes lives all the time and the poor and down-trodden are first on the menu”, he would say further. Even though the man was often kind to people all throughout his life, he believed that one should live life to the fullest in every way. He also believed strongly that a woman had every right to an abortion, and if she chose to do so, it was her business only.
One day the man found himself in front of an abortion clinic watching women walk in as protestors were praying and begging the pregnant women not to go in the clinic. A woman who was protesting began talking loudly to a young pregnant woman who was walking into the clinic. This immediately enraged the man and he began yelling at and cursing the woman who was protesting and others began to join in.
The young woman walking into the clinic became scared and upset at both the woman protesting and the man, and immediately turned and ran away from the clinic. This enraged the man and others even more and they escalated their yelling and insults toward the woman protestor. The woman protestor cried and left the scene.
Many, many years later the man was in a serious car accident and was thrown from the car. As he lay dying, many people consoled him as an ambulance rushed to the scene. A young priest who had also been called to the scene began to perform last rites. The man, although in terrible pain and very terrified, gruffly said to the priest, “Don’t waste your breath with that prayer, Father, I’m not a Catholic and even if I was, God has never gone out of his way to help me – take a good look”.
The priest gently smiled at the man and stopped saying the last rites. After a few seconds, the priest began to softly recite the Divine Chaplet of Mercy. “For the sake of His Sorrowful Passion, have Mercy on us and the whole world”, he recited over and over. The man peacefully passed into darkness.
Suddenly, a great light engulfed the man along with great love. The man was more afraid than ever as he knew he was in the presence of God. He asked what was happening and who it was that he was speaking to. He asked this because he could only see one form but felt there were others in the area as well.
“I am Jesus, Son of the Living God, and you have been born to a new life. We are here to judge your life on earth”. Immediately, as in a video, the man began to see his entire life in review. The good and the bad.
Many times when he helped the poor, other times when he freely partook in sins of the flesh. Times when he helped the elderly, and times when he intentionally hurt other people. The life review seemed to stop as quickly as it had started and the man felt ashamed.
Quickly, however, the man recovered, and recalled what he had said to friends during his life. “What chance did I have when my creator never showed any effort to reach out to me with love?” “Why did you not even try a little to help save me from myself?”.
The Lord looked lovingly at the man and played back the life scene in front of the abortion clinic. The man was mortified as he watched himself become enraged. He was overcome with resign and asked the Lord what happened to the woman protestor who had left the scene those many years ago.
The Lord responded, “She was called to me a few days later, she had accomplished her mission”.
“And what of the woman that decided not to have an abortion that day?”, he asked.
“She bore a healthy son and passed to me after childbirth, she had accomplished her mission”.
The man looked down and felt very sad. He slowly looked up and softly said to the Lord, “I wish I would have met her son; that I could know what he looks like and see how he turned out in life”. But, I never did, and yet you show me these images anyway.” Lord, can you not show me one instance in my life where you went out of your way even a little bit to show the extent of your love for me”?.
“You met her son at the twilight of your life”, said the Lord, “He will be joining us soon – he has accomplished his mission”. “Come, let us go to heaven”.
The man felt happy, relieved, and curious all at once, and felt compelled to ask Jesus two final questions. “Who was this woman’s son and what was his mission?” , asked the man.
“He was a simple priest who believed in God’s Mercy, and you were his mission”, responded three voices.
What are Catholics to learn in the Church’s teaching about the intrinsic evil of abortion? What is one to think of Cathoics when over half of them give their name identification and support to the pro-abortion party which is the only reason abortion-on-demand remains the law-of-the-land?
I love the quotes, I pray that the message will get across and that peoples hearts will be turned.
Stilbelieve, as hard as you may try to make it, abortion is not a political issue, it is a moral issue. As followers of Christ we need to be concerned with all man not just Catholics. 1 Timothy 2:1 “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men”. Catholics have abortions just as much as non-Catholics. If you think eliminating a certain political party will in turn eliminate abortion you are wrong. You need to look towards our Father for the elimination of abortion not a political party. As Amy stated “There is so much to do to help the unborn. But we can do it. Together”.
I do believe that for people that don’t have strong Jesus based morals, may rely on the government for their morals. They look at laws and make sure they operate within these laws even though they are against the laws of G~d. Even some that have Jesus based morals seem to eliminate their own sins as being better than someone else’s sins.
Love this editorial, speaks volumes and the truth: http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/state-of-the-unborn1/
@ceecee,
I posted the following comment today on another article in NCR. I obviously have not made it clear enough to you in what you have read that abortion is not a political issue, it’s a spiritual one. It does not concern people involved with getting abortions because that will never be stopped. Never ever, no matter how much praying is done.
Abortion has become the problem it is in America because of a bad U.S. Supreme Court decision that needs to be overturned. It remains the law of the land because of only one political party who will not support justices to the court they suspect would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. And the only justices that party appoints are pro-abortion judges. The largest single supporter of that party are Catholics. Abortion-on-demand remains the law of the land because of CATHOLICS. Here is what I posted on another NCR article today.
“The state of the unborn is in the hands of Catholics. It always has been. But over half of the Catholics use those hands to keep the pro-abortion party - pro abortion - by continuing to vote for their candidates, and that includes the clergy at all levels and religious as well. President Obama is the latest and worst example of how spiritually schizophrenic modern Catholics have become. They are permitted to be so only by the teachings of the U.S. bishops. How did the Catholic Church get so screwed up?”
Abortion is not a political issue - it’s a spiritual issue. I have written to every bishop in the U.S. since 1999 explaining that. They don’t listen because it means holding the Profession of Faith and the Lord’s Prayer up to their congregations to look at themselves in it to see if they really believe what they say they believe and pray for on Sundays in Mass standing even before the Holy Eucharist. They don’t do that because the bishops themselves are protecting over half of their flocks whose self-identity is Democrat, which is more important to them than the unborn, and that includes the clergy, as well. Prayer is not enough; it takes action. And Democrat Catholics won’t act on what they say they believe and pray for. When the bishops changed the definition of prolife to include non life and death issues, they abandoned the unborn, stealing the name “prolife” which was created to counteract the name “pro-choice” that the supporters of abortion were calling themselves. This is a spiritual battle, and a Church divided can not stand.
@ceecee,
While we both agree that abortion is not a politcal issue, but a spiritual one, as I like call it, or a “moral” one, as you call it, it is amazing how how it occupies so much politcal space. Google Bishop Tobin’s article “President’s Speech; Why I Wasn’t Impressed.”
Abortion occupies political space because it gets candidates votes. Politicians are there to be the voice of their constituents, their beliefs don’t always jive with the constituents, but they still should voice them as such. Why not change the hearts of the constituents, rather than the politician?
People get abortions because they don’t want to have kids. Whether abortions are legal or not, people will still not want to have kids, while still engaging in sexual relations. And abortions will still get performed, they just want be advertised on the internet any longer. Are you looking to change the legality of abortions are change the hearts of those considering abortions? I think you have a better chance of changing the hearts of those considering abortions. Protesting in front of abortion clinics isn’t going to cut it.
Women are the ones who have to carry the pregnancy. What have you done to ensure that women know there options when it comes to having sex? What have you done for the self esteem of young girls who are at high risk of having premarital sex? How many people have you shared the word of God too? These things can be done whether a particular political party is in power or not. They have more of a chance of preventing abortion than electing the right judge and overturn Roe v. Wade. I know it’s easy and gives you warm and fuzzies when you vote for a pro-life candidate, but there is so much more that needs to be done.
As Amy stated “There is so much work to do to help the unborn.” Take a look at your work it may need to be done differently.
“Are you looking to change the legality of abortions are change the hearts of those considering abortions?
ceecee, my objective is pure and simple - to stop the wholesale murder of unborn babies. The wholesale murdering of soon to be born babies has come about because of a wrongly decided U.S. Supreme Court case 38 years ago. The President nominates justices to the Supreme Court, and the U.S. Senate approves or rejects the nominees. People elect the President and the U.S. Senators. One major political party supports abortion-on-demand remaining the law-of-the-land. That is the Democrat Party. The other major political party supports a Human Rights Amendment to the Constitution restoring the right to life for the unborn. Depending who the people elect determines whether Roe v Wade will be overturned or not. So far the Democrats have been successful in keeping sold prolife members from becoming the majority on the court, doing so by character assassination regardless if the nominee is qualified. Republicans don’t play the same game in the Senate when it comes to nominees. If they are qualified, Republicans will give them their votes. They don’t try to demonize them in order to not vote for them just to keep another supporter of Roe v Wade from sitting on the court. I don’t agree with their doing that, but that’s an example of the character difference between the members of the two parties. This is half of the playing field.
The other half of the field concerns the voters, and specifically one kind of voter…Catholics. Catholics, because their Church has a long history of opposing abortion. In addition, church attending Catholics at Sunday obligation Masses, are given an opportunity after the gospel and the homily, to make a statement of what they believe. That statement contains the bare minimum of beliefs one must profess to believe to call oneself a Christian. In it, they profess to believe in the “Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life.” In other words, they believe that life comes from God. A short time later, those Catholics stand before the Holy Eucharist to pray the only prayer Our Lord ever gave us, in which they pray for God’s “will be done on earth; and to be (let not) into temptation, but delivered from evil.” No one makes those Catholics say those words. They say them voluntarily on their own. Well, if they really believe what they say, then how can they give their name identification and support to the political party diabolically opposed to what they profess to believe and pray for every weekend? This is why the issue of abortion is spiritual, not political. Catholics are the single, largest voting block for the pro-abortion party. WHY!?
Such Catholics don’t have to become Republicans – they just have to decide if they really believe what they say they believe, and if so, then choose to be Catholic or Democrat- they can’t be both if they are being honest with themselves. This is the responsibility of the bishops and all clergy to come to grips with. This is the other spiritual issue (is a Catholics word believable) that they have to address, but refuse to do so. WHY!?
Your avocation, ceecee, will never end, nor should it, because abortions will continue after Roe v Wade is overturned, just as they were done long before 1973. The need to change peoples hearts one on one will always be needed. But the mass murder of babies can be ended if Catholics removed their names from Democrat registration rolls and they boycott voting for that party until they change their position on abortion. There is no reason for any church going Catholic who sincerely believes what she or he profess to believe and pray for to remain in the Democrat Party as long as that party is supporting abortion-on-demand.
As for me, I have done some speaking in a boys high school along with a female prolife speaker in which I addressed the type of girl they would want to pick for a wife. But most of my efforts have been in electoral politics in which I decided years ago that I would never have any influence on any Supreme Court judges, or the President. I might have some, but very little influence on my U.S. Senator. The only elective office I could have the most influence on at the national level would be my House of Representative member. So, I have focused on them and have helped replace several pro-abortion Democrats with prolife Republicans, both in Congress and in the CA Legislature – going to work with one of them for a number of years. Because of my experiences and my love for my Church, and the unborn – I see the achilles’ hill of abortion and the pro-abortion party are the Democrat Catholics. That one group could, and should, based on THEIR OWN WORDS, end abortion on demand by simply boycotting the Democrat Party. The party would not survive without Catholics, and would have to change it’s position from supporting abortion to opposing it to remain a viable party. That won’t take decades, either, like we have had to suffer since Row v Wade. It would only need to take one or two election cycles of a Catholic boycott to reduce and then stop the wholesale murdering.
BTY, I’m a south Chicago, Irish Catholic born, pro union, liberal, blue collar Democrat up until the time the Democrat Party supported Roe v Wade. I registered out of the party but could not become a Republican because of my Democrat brainwashing. So for a couple years I was a Decline to state. Guess what? I found that there was life after not being a Democrat. And I enjoyed my new identity of just being a Catholic.
Abortion is both a spiritual/moral issue and political one. First of all we need to vote out of office those politicians that support abortion on demand. The mid term election that just passed was an encouraging one for PRO-LIFE. Many long seated politicians were turned out for their support of AOD (abortion on demand)
As Catholics we have the Five Non-Negotiables that we need to remember when we are considering support for a candidate. Doesn’t matter what party is in consideration. They are: 1)Abortion. 2)Embrionic stem-cell research. 3)Cloning. 4)Euthanasia. 5)Homosexuality. These five issues trump all others. You might like a certain candidate because he agrees with you on issues, but if he supports any of the Five Non-Negotionables we don’t vote for him/her as good Catholics that follow the Churches teachings.
We need to pray for those involved in performing abortions and the woman who are considering abortion as a way of solving the problem of an unwanted pregnancy that their hearts and minds will be changed. We need to pray for those people involved in prayer vigils at abortion clinics and those that are involved in support of life in any way.
Lastly, and most importantly we need to do more at the parish level. All of our parishes need to have an active Pro-Life Ministry. If you don’t have one ask Father why. We need to change hearts and minds of those in our parishes. We need to address this issue in Mass continuosly and vigorously. Also contraception. Most abortions come about because of failed contraception. We all need to be actively involved. ABORTION IS ABOUT TAKING A LIFE. LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION. While you’ve been reading this eleven innocent children of God have been wrenched from the safety of their mothers womb. Visit: 40daysforlife.com or priestsforlife.com. God bless you.
“Lastly, and most importantly we need to do more at the parish level. All of our parishes need to have an active Pro-Life Ministry.”
@Gary O.
The problem there is the bishops adoption of “Social Justice” issues as being “pro-life” issue as well. The bishops believe those “life after birth” are important to have a “consistent ethic of life.” And there is lies the problem - the bishops imply the pro-abortion party is “more favorable” to those issues than is the pro-life party. The consequence of that has been to enable Catholic Democrats to remain Democrats and vote for the pro-abortion candidates because they are supposedly better, on paper, on the “other pro-life issues. The intended result, which I believe was the reason for their changing the definition of prolife back in the early/mid 80’s, was to soothe the consciences of Catholics Democrats in the big Catholic diocese. It was Cardinal Bernardin of the Archdiocese of Chicago who came up with the idea of expanding the definition of prolife to include “social justice” issues in order to have a “more consistent ethic of life,” dubbed “a Seamless Garment.” However, he had another reason for doing that, as well, according to his life long friend, Eugene Kennedy, and author of “Cardinal Bernardin,” a favorable biography of the Cardinal, in which he said the following about the motivation Bernardin had for the change of definition of prolife: Not only would this move gain greater support from Catholics and others but it would KEEP THE PROLIFE MOVEMENT FROM FALLING COMPLETELY UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE RIGHT WING CONSERVATIVES WHO WERE BECOMING ITS DOMINANT SPONSORS.” (emphasis added) Now, why would his move result in Catholics “greater support from Catholics?” It would because Catholic Democrats, politicians and non-politicians alike, could now claim they were “pro-life, too.” And they did, creating the insulting slogan, “Their pro-life didn’t stop at being born;” as if the prolife (anti-abortion) Catholics and others – did ?! And guess what party the “right wing conservatives” were probably in? That’s right – Republican. So, from my perspective, Cardinal Bernardin’s expanding the definition of prolife, which he got the U.S. bishops to go along with, was – political. The fruit of his action has been obvious, saving the Democrat Party and the introduction of leftist cells in Catholic parishes across the states, cells like “Peace and Justice, etc” every thing other that strictly, anti-abortion – saving the babies – that Catholics profess to believe are created by God – that is God’s will on earth – life.
“A house divided cannot stand,” and that is what the outcome of the bishops actions has produced. The Church is not what it used to be – and the culture is worse of for it.
There is a major problem with this picture , I am pro - life portrait. There are only Caucasian Babies on this portrait. The church is to represent the human race. This statement alone does not represent the universal Race. America will produce a universal race and toward that universal Race every nation of history will make a valuable contribution. I apologize for no man because of hiscracial origin. I temember thecwords of Disraeli , when some parliamentary fool called him a Jew: ” I can afford to be called a Jew! ” he exclaimed. Only an ignoramus could have cast such a slur. The Jew has given us our best book, our noblest character and our own civilization in germ,. The Jew is the mental aristocrat of history. Meditating on these words of Disraeli. I indulge in a poetical day- dream that, like Elbert Hubbard , I was making ” little journeys” to the hoes and haunts of the great men of time and history. We are a nation of many races. Each race brings it’s own message and makes it’s own contribution. Our tradition are Anglo- Saxon, but our characteristics are universal . We are destined to lead the world in the enthronement of Christian Ideals
We know that there is only one God - ” I am God and beside me there is none else” . The universe is a unit - the conception of that idea -ONE GOD - is the foundation of all science and theology. There is only one God. There is only one mind. There is only Law. There is no schism in nature. There is only room in the universe for one God. One God ,only One . Every voice of nature Speaks the same truth and attestbthevsame fact- One God and only One.
Astronomy says: “One God - only One”
Botany says: ” One God -Only One
Physiology says: ” One God - Only One
Psychology says: ” One God - Only One
Biology says: ” One God -Only One
History says: ” One God - Only One
Scripture says: ” One God- Only One
There is only obe universe . The universe is a unit. There is life everywhere.Beauty everywhere, Design everywhere,Method everywhere. Progress everywhere.Law everywhere. Motion everywhere. One universal mind. One universal force. One universal process. One universal method of evolution. One universal law of gravitation. One universal law of vibration.
Therefore , Universal Church do the right thing , the images of children on your poster should reflectb these eternal truths, children of all races , not only caucassians
Peace !!!!!!!
