John Paul the Great Catholic University is offering a FREE online crash course in the Catholic Faith. In the span of just 13 weeks - one session per week - you'll get lessons on:
- Jesus and Apostolic Succession
- Natural Philosophy
- Proof for God's Existence
- Philosophical Anthropology
- Creation-Redemption
- Revelation
- The Trinity
- Church - Family of God - Mystical Body of Christ
- Sacraments - Marriage
- Eucharist
- Moral Issues
- Sins - Confession
- Prayer
Best of all - it's totally free. This is a project put together by the students at John Paul the Great and with the help and oversight of their professors. Each session involves a 30 minute video, lecture notes, readings, study guides and quizzes. It's all online. New Media is a subject they focus on quite a bit at JP Catholic, so it's neat to see them using new media to offer this great resource to all of us for this Year of Faith.
Here's an introduction video explaining more:
I'm planning on doing this course. If anyone wants to join me, maybe we can contribute to the discussion on their Facebook page or just use #pillars on Twitter (unless they designate a different one). I hope you'll join me even if you've had similar classes in the past. I'm looking forward to checking it out.
I would encourage you to share this with anyone - Catholic or not - who would like to add a little depth to their understanding of Catholicism. You can't beat free. And you can't underestimate the impact this could have on somebody's life who wants to learn a little bit more.
Check out more on the Pillars of Catholicism website. I think it all kicks off on August 20th. Sounds like a great opportunity to me! What do you think?
Update: I don't think registration starts until Aug 20th. So I don't think you'll see any options to do so until then. And I'm not sure if that's also the same day of the first class. But it appears you'll be able to watch the class at your own time and pace each week (as the material stays available after initially posted).

Thanks! I’ll go with you. May God see and bless your efforts to the glory of His Son Jesus in who’s name we pray
Sounds great! I can’t wait to check it out!
Well, it’s about time someone did this! Everyone seems to be offering Free online open source course, why not on catholic faith! I hope more great catholic thinkers/ speakers join in.

Maybe I am not looking carefully, but I don’t find where to sign up or how this course will be presented. Could we have some information on how to enroll?
this is the page, you don’t need to enroll, i believe you just go to that page on August 20th :) http://pillarsofcatholicism.com/
Thanks, Sarah, for giving me the page. Will there be a time?
you’re welcome..it doesn’t say. Don’t think there is a time. But i just re-read says “registration begins Aug 20th” same day course begins.
The website also says that a new episode wil be unlocked each week and will be “permanently accessible” so that says to me there is no set time you need to be available to watch it.
Wow, that’s great! Count me in!
I would have to agree that it is a golden opportunity. I recently purchased the Jeff Cavins series and one on Catholic history. Pretty pricey but just the chance to evangelize our faith makes it worthwhile…
I thank you for this opportunity to revisit my faith. I am a practicing cradle catholic 71 years old but a little tune-up is always good.
I had seen this, too. Two of our friends kids graduated from JPII and told us about it. It is an EXCELLENT school, and this is what they are all about, putting the faith out there, so it was no surprise to see the program. I am planning on doing it too, and would love to take part in a FB back and forth. Hoping it will answer non Catholic’s question, or better still, clear up misconceptions people have, about the Catholic Faith.
This will be a great help for me to learn more about my Faith! I became Catholic in 2003 but RCIA couldn’t teach everything in a limited time. Thank GOD for this course!
I just wanted to Thank You for doing this, that we the people are able to get a better understanding and able to share among our Family, Friends and Neighbors.
Where can I go sign up? Can you be able to access the courses at anytime of the day when they are given or do we have to log in at specific time?
Can’t wait to get started.
Once again, Thank You and God Bless !
I’m so excited. I hope some of my friends come along for the ride. Thank you. Thank you.
Count me in.I’ll try to round up a few more :)
I shared this information on Google+. I’m not sure why you haven’t taken to Google+, Matthew. There is a very vibrant Catholic community there. We would love to hear your words of wisdom on Google+!
I start RCIA next month! I’m thinking of converting from Mormonism and I’m so excited about studying that I might just take this course right along with RCIA. Does anyone think that would be too much? I’ve already read many books and have a fairly good understanding, but as you know, there is much to learn.
This does sound great. @Kelly, I think you have to be the judge of how much material and time is right. Perhaps you have a trusted friend or spiritual director to whom you could address the question of balance. And, blessings on your journey! I converted from Conservative Baptist in the mid-1970s and I’m still excited and still learning!
Count me in! Good example of technology improving the culture.
When his team returned to training camp after doing poorly the previous season, Vince Lombardi called the players together & said, “Guys, we’re going to get back to fundamentals. This is a football.” To which one of the players famously replied, “Wait, Coach, you’re going too fast!”
So, this sounds like a good opportunity to do a review of the basics.
FIRST OF ALL I THANK THE STUDENTS AND LECTURERS OF JP UNIVERSITY FOR THIS LIFE CHANGING PROGRAMME. I WANT SAY THAT AS CONFIRM CATHOLIC THAT I`M INTERESTED IN THIS PROGRAMME.
I’m really happy we have this opportunity to boost our faith, and will definitely register for the course. :D
There is always a need to learn more of my God and see Him from a differnt prepetive. To see God with more love and hopefully grow in His love.
I am a 80 year old cradle catholic and I look forward to this opportunity. Wonderful idea! Come on in the water is fine.
i am interested but don’t know how to register to this course
please instruct
thank you
Great initiative!! Would love to be a part of it!
Aug. 19th: I am so happy about this course. I’ve been watching Fr. Barron’s ‘Catholicism’ and this should augment that. However, I just went to the website and clicked on the video there and nothing happens - the video embedded in the article above plays fine…can anyone tell me what I might do to get the website video to play? Thanks and God bless…
Hi, the following info was posted in the comments, hope this answers the above questions:

This is just wonderfull to be able to learn more about the Faith, Thank you
I plan on being there. We are moving next week so it will be hectic, but I am looking forward to it.
Yes!!! My daughter’s intended (not engaged yet) is in Afghanistan and can only see the Chaplain once a month, at the most. This will be a great intro to the Faith that he can use. Thank you.
Great idea!! I would like to participate.
Seems there are 2 main areas on which Catholics need to need to focus.
1.Dogmatic Theology -what Catholics should believe (teaching)
2.Moral Theology - how Catholics should act (morally)
Included in Moral Theology is Scripture, Prayer

I am very excited about this course. I hope in the near future you can have it in Spanish.
I am quite excited about the course.
I’m having difficulty with the site.
1) I can’t find a place to register.
2) I can’t access the first lesson. If I click on “review a lesson,” I get
“Learning Outcome” (what the students will learn about.)
Maybe I’m just too early (?) Or maybe I’m missing something (?)
Can anyone else register, and access the lesson?
I haven’t been able to do anything with it either…
FYI - I don’t think registration starts until Aug 20th. So I don’t think you’ll see any options to do so until then. And I’m not sure if that’s the same day of the first class also. I will love to participate in this course and Learn more about Mu catholic Faith reality and history please send me the correct informatition in order to sign inn Thanks
It doesn’t work on Internet Explorer. You have to use Chrome.
Just watched the first lesson…very impressed!
I use Google Chrome. Following the link in the article above, I had to hit REFRESH 2 or 3 times before the new info would appear.
Then, click on preview lesson, and from blue task bar, click on lesson #1.
Too early to take the quiz yet, maybe by the end of the day?
Even though I am taking the RCIA class at my local church, I will take this class too.
I used Internet Explorer on my MAC and aside from a few hesitations was able to watch and hear. One has to be patient.
I look forward to attending these classes. Hopefully, a registration link will be provided, soon. Thank you,

I have been searching around for a course like this and I have just watched the first lesson from Michael and printed the notes which includes detail of reading material and questions. I also took notes while watching the video.I will share my thoughts on facebook later. God Bless Denis McCourt Ireland.

Having been a Catholic who was being “massed at” every Sunday, not knowing the beauty and depth of my religion, this course has given me a whole new understanding and appreciation of what it means to be a Catholic and a Christian. Thank you! You are developing and providing me with the necessary ammunition to defend my faith and God Bless you and your future endeavors!
