So the new Mass Translation has gone into effect! (Woo-hoo!) But there are still questions about it that need to be asked.
For example: If you’re in a *different* liturgy (not the Mass, one of the other sacraments) and the priest says “The Lord be with you,” what are you supposed to say? The old “And also with you” or the new “And with your spirit”?
Or what if you’re saying the Confetior in another service? Or how about using the Collect from Mass in the Liturgy of the Hours? Or taking Communion to an elderly person who suffers from dementia and is only used to the old translation?
Also, what should you do if a priest tells you in confession not to confess all your mortal sins? Does this invalidate the confession? Do you need to go back and confess them? What to say to a priest who tells you this kind of thing?
What are our responsibilities as customers? Do we have a moral obligation to refuse to purchase products that may have involved animal cruelty or poor working conditions at factories in the third world? Is it a sin to do so? How could we untangle these questions?
Suppose you innocently mention something to a co-worker and that results in the co-worker going out and committing a mortal sin. How responsible are you for what happened? Did *you* sin?
These are among the questions we explore in this week’s episode of the Jimmy Akin Podcast!

Hi Jimmy,
I love listening to your podcasts. I so wish I were as intelligent and well spoken as you. I always learn so much listening to them. That being said, every padcast makes me so glad I am an atheist. If it were a choice of be as well spoken as you or a theist, I would choose my current state.
I enjoyed your thinking on animal cruelty and experimentation. It was exactly as I believe, Animals can be used to improve human life without undue pain or suffering of the animal. I am an animal though. Although I (we) are the smartest animal, that is our only claim to fame. We are not the biggest, fastest, tallest or anything else. If you claim we have a soul, I’ll need a definition of what that means. If we are “made in Gods image”, I need to know how God differs from the Chimp or other great apes. Oposible thumbs seems kind of minor.
One of your points is a real quandry for me though. I (my wife really) has 3 dogs. We pay about $600/year on them. I only give to the Lansing food bank about $250/year. The UMC gets about $3,000 but it does no real worldly good. There are so many hungry in Lansing, MI that the money for the dogs would help. As I said, I’m in a moral quandry. Kill the dogs and feed the hungry or keep the dogs. Things to think about…
The end of you podcast was also good re: Sin. I’m so glad I am, by definition, without sin. Have I done my neighbor wrong? Occasionally. Have I broken a law? No. Sin? Without a god, there is no sin.
I anxiously await your next podcast. They are worth the wait and the time to listen.
Rover.
Thanks for writing Rover. I’ll try to respond on an upcoming podcast. For purposes of clarity, what UMC are you referring to? I can think of several.
I’m very very associated with a United Methodist Church (UMC). Sadly, although I love the people, it is just a social club for me. I’ve tried to come out to the minister but he knows and is avoiding it. Thanks for asking, I felt bad about my posting. Atheist are the most hated group, and it is dangerous and hard to be out.
I was at a Rosary for Priestly Vocations last Friday night (Rosary and Benediction) and after the entrance hymn and signing with the cross the priest greeted us with “The Lord be you” to which most everyone responded, “And with your spirit!” (Although some said “And also with your spirit!”)The new response seemed natural.
