Thomas More College of Liberal Arts

A liberal education aims to free men and women from the constraints of error, false opinion, and the uncertainty of life. This was at the heart of the great Greek educational system—paideia—this, united to faith in Christ, is the heart of the education at Thomas More College of Liberal Arts.

Why Thomas More

Thomas More College of Liberal Arts is unique in the purity of its vision: education of the mind and soul in the liberal arts, the Great Books and the Scriptures and theology of the Church, in a charitable community of fellows and students, each dedicated to the truth. Thus, the college affirms and enriches the age-old tradition, inherited from Greco-Roman civilization, of studying the humanities through the masterworks of Classical and Christian civilization. It holds with equal conviction that the path to Wisdom is best found with the good companions of the Catholic intellectual tradition — the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, whose lives were dedicated to understanding and living according to the Word of God.

School’s Comments:

Institution:  Thomas More College was founded in 1978 by a group of Catholic laymen in order to resist the increasing secularization and liberalization of American higher education. Their mission was simple — to create a college whose members were dedicated to seeking wisdom and sharing it joyfully with the world. Located in southern New Hampshire, Thomas More College continues to pursue this mission by offering its students a truly Catholic education in the liberal arts, humane letters, and the disciplines of philosophy and theology. The college offers one integrated curriculum for all its students marked by an emphasis on classroom discussion and by studying exclusively the Great Books. The collegiate life at Thomas More is unique. Intentionally small, Thomas More offers students an intimate and authentic community united in the quest for what is true, good and beautiful. Every student spends the second semester of sophomore year studying in Rome. By traversing catacombs and cloisters, piazzas and palazzos, our students experience the heart of the Christian West. For more than 40 years, Thomas More College has consistently graduated students who seek wisdom, speak eloquently and are prepared to engage the secular world with keen minds and hearts dedicated to the truth of the faith.
