Human Tissue, Painkilling Drugs Found in Detroit Abortionist's Trunk

Executing a search warrant, police also discovered medical equipment in the car of Dr. Michael Roth

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. — Police executing a search warrant on an impounded auto in West Bloomfield, Mich., uncovered more than they expected: In the vehicle’s trunk were vials of human tissue — possibly from aborted fetuses — along with medical equipment and large amounts of painkilling drugs. Channel 7 Action News reported Oct. 13 that Dr. Michael Roth, who works at a number of abortion businesses but also as an OB-GYN for the Catholic St. John/Providence Health System, may have been performing illegal abortions out of the trunk of his car.

The case began two weeks earlier, when Dr. Roth’s vehicle struck and critically injured a special needs child near the intersection of 14 Mile Road and Orchard Lake Road in West Bloomfield. Reports indicated that the doctor had not been drinking; but the car was impounded, pending an investigation of the accident.

Last week, a search warrant was obtained and investigators opened the trunk in search of the “black box” data recorder. There, they discovered 14 unlabeled plastic containers. Each contained human tissue, believed to be fetal tissue and aborted fetuses. Officers also found a cache of medical equipment. In the console of the passenger compartment was a large supply of Fentanyl, a drug used to relieve pain and sedate patients before and during medical procedures such as abortion.

The containers have been transferred to the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office for further study. Roth has not yet been charged in the case; but on Tuesday evening, a search warrant was executed at his West Bloomfield home. Agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, West Bloomfield police, and agents from the Michigan Attorney General's Office worked together to remove financial records, computers and electronic equipment from the home.

A Long History of Legal Trouble

Roth remains under investigation, but no charges have been filed against him as yet. However, the doctor has a long history of criminal charges and legal problems.

Lynn Mills, a long-time pro-life activist in the Detroit area, spoke with the Register, detailing Roth’s recent history. He worked at the Summit abortion facility in Detroit, and at another business in Lathrup Village where he performed late-term abortions, which the other abortionists on staff, Dr. Abraham “Alberto” Hodari and Dr. Jacob Kalo, would not handle.

During one of the 40 Days for Life campaign, Mills stated, an abortion of a larger fetus had been scheduled; but the facility didn't have properly sterilized instruments. Roth, rather than explaining to the mother and father that he couldn't perform the abortion that day, simply walked out, leaving staff to explain. The abortion-minded parents filed a complaint against Roth which resulted in disciplinary action and a fine.

Mills said that in 2004, Roth was fined by the Michigan Department of Health for performing an abortion in a private residence, violating Michigan's Public Health Code sections 16221 (a), (b)(i), and (b)(vi) 1978 PA 368.

The website abortiondocs.org, abortion advocacy group Pro-Life Nation's clearinghouse for information gathered by pro-life activists from all over the nation, lists nine documents detailing legal action against Roth, including the following:

  • As far back as 1988, Roth severely injured a woman in the process of performing an abortion at Henry Ford Hospital, resulting in a perforated uterus, hemorrhage and hysterectomy. A lawsuit was filed, and Roth was required to pay damages in the amount of $200,000.
  • On May 19, 2004, Roth was placed on six months probation and ordered to pay a $15,000 fine for violation of Michigan Public Health Code.
  • In July 2012, a 30-year-old Detroit woman sued Summit Medical Center and Roth for an amount in excess of $25,000, for perforating her bowel and uterus during an abortion procedure on Jan. 29, 2011.
  • In December 2012, Roth was disciplined by the Michigan Board of Medicine and required to pay a $2,000 fine for negligence, incompetence and lack of good moral character, after violating the public health code in two abortion procedures and perforating a woman's uterus.

In January 2015, Michael Roth was one of three plaintiffs found negligent for failure to diagnose and treat a woman's ectopic pregnancy at the Eastland Women's Clinic in Macomb County, Mich.

Monica Migliorino Miller of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society said, "That Michael Roth would be performing illegal abortions--either in his home, or even in the homes of women--shows the despicable, sordid practice that is abortion. It also shows that Roth as an abortionist did not really care about the health and safety of women, as these abortions were not taking place in safe, sterile environments. This is just another sad, sorry story that exposes the dark world of the abortion practice and helps the public see that dark world. On top of the scandal of Planned Parenthood selling the body parts of aborted babies--and now this! We see the unscrupulous nature of the abortion practitioner--a nature forged in disrespect for life.

Citizens for a Pro-Life Society has already offered to bury any aborted babies that may have been confiscated by the West Bloomfield Police Dept. We hope to give these victims of injustice at least a measure of respect."
