Krakow Gives a Warm Welcome to American WYD Pilgrims

The Polish of city of Krakow is exploding with youthful enthusiasm. Everywhere one looks, one cannot help but see young people from around the world in color-coordinated outfits or regional attire, happily waving their national flags and chanting.

Despite speaking different languages, singing different songs and having traveled from different sides of the world, what unites them? If you ask anyone, the response is: love for the Lord.

One other thing, too: They cannot wait to be in the presence of Pope Francis. Ask any of them what excites them, and you will hear the anticipation.

“We love Pope Francis!” exclaimed a group of Americans I happened upon as they traveled church to church, wrapping up in Krakow a spiritual journey they have been making throughout Poland for World Youth Day. During this week, there is a discount on public transit, which enables young people to have an unlimited travel pass for getting around via trams or buses. However, it is a very walkable city.

Another thing is for certain: Pope St. John Paul II is overlooking this city and his homeland. His face is seen all over the city: on the buildings, in the statues and now on the young people’s t-shirts and hats.

For those interested in the culinary highlights, special for the young people is “Pope’s Cream Pie,” available in the food tents at a very affordable price. I need to try it soon, but they tell me it’s very good.

The elegance, horse-drawn carriages and castle give the city a fairy-tale vibe, but it’s warm and welcoming at the same time, giving a certain sense of intimacy as pilgrims gather in the main square. Throughout the city, there are stages where testimonies, musical performances and prayer bring everyone together.

If the energy is already so palpable, I cannot wait to see how it will be once Francis arrives.
