Among the stories you’ll find in this three-section issue of the Register (which contains our annual Christmas Gift Guide) is a piece by Rome correspondent Edward Pentin on Archbishop Carlo Viganò, who was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as the new ambassador to the United States.
The new nuncio (from the Latin nuntius, for envoy) is a diplomat with more than 40 years of experience. He succeeds Archbishop Pietro Sambi, the popular nuncio who died in July. Archbishop Viganò said he would join the U.S. bishops at their Nov. 14-16 meetings in Baltimore, and the Register will be there as well.
We echo the words of Archbishop Timothy Dolan, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, who recently issued a statement of welcome and assured the new nuncio of his brother bishops’ prayers and support.
And I ask you to join me in praying for Archbishop Viganò as he begins his mission to our country.
God bless you!
