Seminarians’ Soccer Face-Off: Mount St. Mary's Won!

Mount St. Mary’s University seminarians proved victorious in the Vianney Cup Soccer Tournament over the weekend, prevailing over Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary 4-1 in the championship.

In the first round, Mount St. Mary’s beat Baltimore’s St. Mary’s Seminary 5-3. Saint Charles Borromeo won against Theological College of Catholic University 2-0. St. Mary’s took third place over Theological College in a 3-0 match.

The Vianney Cup will reside at the Mount until next year. Said Msgr. Steven Rohlfs, “The weather was perfect. The sportsmanship was memorable, and the outcome was an added treat. We look forward to competing in the Vianney Cup next year.”

Mount St. Mary’s University Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md., is hosting its inaugural Vianney Cup Soccer Tournament this Saturday. The tournament is named after St. John Vianney, patron saint of parish priests.

Taking the field will be Chase Hilgenbrinck, pro-soccer player-turned-seminarian of Mount St. Mary’s. (See our interview with him here).

Hilgenbrinck and other Mount seminarians will compete against future priests from Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia; Theological College, the seminary of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.; and St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. 

The tournament is free and open to the public.
