Whether you are an old pro or a new hack at this “new media” thing, it is worth your time to pay a visit to SQPN.
SQPN (Star Quest Production Network) is a multimedia organization specializing in the production of audio and video programs faithful to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Its mission is to respond to the Church’s call to use the media for religious information, for evangelization and catechesis and for formation and education.
That sounds nice. But where SQPN hits the ball out of the park is how they accomplish this mission statement. To sum it up…they get it.
Whether you are interested in cooking, Star Wars, family, NFP, pop culture, rock music, movies, mass, prayer, video games, technology, travel, Church news, what hamsters have to do with the end of the world, or staying fit - all from an authentically Catholic perspective - SQPN has a podcast (and more) for you.
I think three of the best things about SQPN are:
1) SQPN gives a platform for a whole lot of individual Catholics in New Media to come together in a coherent, unified mission to offer an experience where the whole is certainly greater than the sum of the parts. Which is how the Body of Christ works best.
2) The content meets people where they are by embracing what is Catholic in the everyday. Catholics are regular people too.
3) Everything SQPN offers has a high production value. That is so important that we Catholics do our best to produce high quality new media. We have the best content, no doubt about it. It deserves to be presented in the best way possible. Not just to be impressive, but to be effective. SQPN does a good job with this and continues to get better and better as the community learns and grows together.
Another way besides their website that they are doing all of this is through their annual Catholic New Media Celebration. It was a blessing to attend last year in San Antonio. I met so many outstanding people, learned a lot and had a great time.
I’m definitely planning on attending again this year in Boston. Hope to see you there!
