Actor Mickey Rourke, who made a comeback in last year’s film The Wrestler, has revealed that a Catholic priest helped to save his life.
“One day I looked in the mirror and I saw myself the way others saw me,” said Rourke. “I saw the armor and I scared … myself.”
Rourke, who was battling alcohol and drug addiction, says that the priest stopped him from committing suicide, reported Showbiz News.
“We’d go in the basement, he’d pour me a glass of wine, we’d smoke cigarettes, and then we’d pray,” said Rourke.
Rourke also sought professional psychological help. Rourke says that his addictions stem from growing up in a home with an abusive stepfather.
Our Sunday Visitor interviewed the actor about this earlier this year. It identified the priest as New York’s Holy Cross’ pastor, Father Peter Colapietro.
Rourke is the latest in a string of Hollywood-types who have rediscovered Catholicism, including such celebrities as actor Sylvester Stallone and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas.
