A new study shows that engaged couples who plan ways to strengthen their marriage by applying “benevolent love” are happier and more satisfied through the years. Vincent Jeffries, a sociologist at California State University and lead researcher of the study, equated benevolent love with the classical virtues: temperance, fortitude, justice, prudence and charity. Couples create rules of behavior that become the “culture of the marriage,” said Jeffries. “And the rules often reflect these virtues.”
