Women at Work: Pros and Cons

Fact of Life

by The Editors, Register correspondent Sunday, Oct 25, 2009 11:59 PM Comment

A new Rockefeller Foundation survey finds that around three-quarters of Americans believe that the increasing presence of women in the workforce has been very or somewhat positive for American society and the economy. But there’s a bit of a backlash, too. Some 65% of respondents feel the decrease in homes with a stay-at-home parent has been somewhat or very negative for American society. “Both men and women are concerned about what’s happening to families when everybody’s at work,” Heather Boushey, a lead researcher, told MSNBC. A glaring example of cause for the concern: 42% of women and 36% of men said there had been a time when they were unable to take time off to care for a child in need of parental attention.
