Why Do Catholics ...?

What are some good prayers to pray during the Advent season?

A blessing for your Advent wreath is appropriate (via the bishops’ website, USCCB.org):

Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ:

He is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples;

He is the wisdom that teaches and guides us;

He is the Savior of every nation.

Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath.

May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation.

May he come quickly and not delay.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Also timely are antiphons for Advent (also from the bishops’ website), including:

"O Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law: Come to save us, Lord our God!"

It is also good to keep in mind those less fortunate this season, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The U.S. bishops posted this prayer online:

God of all mercies, God of all consolation, comfort us in our afflictions, that we might comfort those who are in trouble with the same consolation we have received.

Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
