Discernment of Spirits

CATHOLIC TV At 12:30 p.m. Mondays, 7:30 a.m. Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays, 3:30 p.m. Fridays and 1 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sundays, Father Tim Gallagher of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary, a spiritual director and retreat master, presents St. Ignatius Loyola’s 14 rules for discernment of spirits and shows how they can lead to spiritual growth.


SUNDAY, 8 p.m.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

ABC In St. Louis, Ty Pennington and volunteers remodel the home of nurse Dawn Martirez and her husband, Emmanuel, to equip it with safety features for their special-needs twin sons, Evan and Alec. Told her babies would have severe genetic problems, Dawn refused to abort them. In Ballwin, Mo., Ty and friends revamp More Than Coffee, a coffee shop where Sam Malek, who has had 29 cerebral palsy-related surgeries in the past 40 years, employs people who have disabilities.


MONDAY, 10 p.m.

The Journey to Palomar

PBS This 90-minute documentary profiles the life of U.S. astronomer and inventor George Ellery Hale (1868-1938). Despite years of suffering nervous collapses and hallucinations brought on by overwork, Hale persisted in lobbying scientists, industrialists and government officials and finally realized his vision of building the world’s four largest telescopes, including the Palomar Observatory.


TUESDAY, 11 p.m.

Catholic Canvas

EWTN This is the premiere episode of a 10-part series on the Vatican Museums’ art treasures. The elements and key figures of salvation history are showcased: angels, Old Testament events, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Epiphany, Christ’s earthly ministry and his passion, death and resurrection, St. Peter and other saints, as well as the Last Judgment.

Our Mission Is Mercy

FAMILYLAND TV Each episode of this Be Not Afraid Family Hour nine-part series includes the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

FRIDAY, 7 p.m.

Modern Marvels: Civil War Tech

HISTORY Technological advances such as aerial reconnaissance, instant communication, battlefield medicine, food processing, troop transport and weapons improvements made the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865) the first “modern” war. Advisory: TV-PG.


SATURDAY, 8 p.m.

Build It Bigger: Major League Stadium

SCIENCE CHANNEL This episode chronicles the construction of Nationals Park, the $650 million, 41,888-seat baseball stadium in southeast Washington, D.C., that is the home of the new Washington Nationals. Advisory: TV-PG.
