Catholic TV Shows

CatholicTV Run by Boston Catholic Television and carried by Sky Angel, Comcast and other outlets, this station provides 24-hour Catholic programming across the United States every day, from Holy Mass (weekdays 9:30 a.m., 7:30 p.m.) to the Rosary, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, the live interview show This Is the Day (Tuesdays 10:30 a.m., 8 p.m., Fridays 10:30 a.m., 6 p.m., re-airs all week), spirituality, Scripture, Church history, Catholic travel, current affairs and kids’ shows and Archbishop Sheen and Family Theater.


SUNDAY, 9 p.m.

In the Shadow of the Moon

Discovery Channel “I felt that I was literally standing on God’s front porch,” says one of the Apollo astronauts about his walk on the moon. This two-hour documentary uses archival film and interviews with 10 NASA moon flight veterans to tell us all about their thrilling Apollo missions to the moon from 1968 to 1972, including details of their giant rockets and their spacecraft, computers, lunar landers and lunar rovers.

Steadfast and Faithful:

A Martyr’s Journey

EWTN Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky (1903-1973), a Ukrainian Catholic Redemptorist missionary priest and bishop, kept the faith despite torture, a death sentence, eight years in the Soviets’ Vorkuta slave labor camp, more torture and slave labor from 1969 to 1972 and, finally, death in exile from the effects of the torture. A re-air.


MONDAY, 8 p.m.

Ben-Hur

Turner Classic Movies William Wyler directed this Oscars Best Picture epic from 1959, a classic movie retelling of Civil War Gen. Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. Charlton Heston starred in the title role.


MONDAY, 9 p.m.

History Detectives

History This show’s sixth season opens with investigations into a World War II pilot’s diary, the 1856 supposed memoirs of a Mormon elder’s wife and an 1853 Napoleon coin that famed sharpshooter Annie Oakley is said to have hit.


THURSDAY, 8 p.m., live

Life on the Rock

EWTN Tonight’s guest, Father Dan Mode, is a forward-deployed Naval Reserves chaplain who served 22 months in Afghanistan. He wrote The Grunt Padre, a biography of Maryknoll Father James Capodanno, a Naval Reserves chaplain in Vietnam and posthumous Medal of Honor recipient whose cause for canonization is proceeding.


FRIDAY

Fourth of July Shows

PBS, NBC, CBS Celebrate our Independence by watching A Capitol Fourth (PBS, 8 p.m.), with the National Symphony Orchestra and guest stars; Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular (NBC, 9 p.m.), with pro-life songstress Jordin Sparks and other stars; and the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular (CBS, 10 p.m.).
