The Rosary

Nova: First Flower

PBS Researchers ask whether the world’s “first flower” could be the archaefructus, a fossilized plant from China. Others roam China for flower-history clues, and still others propose New Caledonia’s amborella shrub as the oldest flowering plant. A re-airing.


WEDNESDAY, March 17, 8am

For St. Patrick’s Day

TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES Saluting the Irish-American experience are, at 8am, The Flying Irishman, the 1939 story of Douglas “Wrong Way” Corrigan’s 1938 flight from New York City to Ireland instead of his stated objective, California; at 9:15am, The Irish in Us, a 1935 comedy about a New York Irish family; and, at 10:45am, My Wild Irish Rose, a 1947 musical biography of composer Chauncey Olcott (d. 1932) that features the title song and many more favorites.

Great Performances at the Met: The Barber of Seville

PBS Maurizio Benini conducts and Bartlett Sher directs as tenor Juan Diego Florez, mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and baritone Peter Mattei (as Figaro) star in Gioachino Rossini’s beloved 1816 opera buffa. A re-airing from 2007.
