The Story of Knock

EWTN The Mother of Christ, along with St. Joseph, St. John the Evangelist, angels and the Lamb of God upon an altar, appeared outside the parish church in little Knock, County Mayo, Ireland, on the evening of Aug. 21, 1879. As people began to report cures, pilgrims began coming, and the site became a Marian shrine.

SMITHSONIAN CHANNEL This new documentary profiles the British ocean liner that sailed the Atlantic as a luxury passenger ship, 1936-1967, with time out for service as a troop ship during World War II. Archival film and photos, interviews and firsthand accounts from civilian and military passengers tell the ship’s story.

TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES John Sturges directed this 1963 World War II classic that was based on the real-life tunnel escape of 76 Allied prisoners from the supposedly escape-proof Stalag Luft III camp in March 1944. SMITHSONIAN CHANNEL This new special tells the story of the National Park Service, created in 1916, and the 412 areas it controls, including 59 national parks. Sites are preserved for their historical significance and scientific value as well as for their natural resource treasures and scenic grandeur.

EWTN In advance of Pope Francis’ canonization of Mother Teresa on Sept. 4, EWTN salutes the new saint. In the 2011 series Let Us Love at 6:30pm and 2:30am Monday-Sunday, Msgr. Anthony Figueiredo interviews Catholic leaders about Mother and her Missionaries of Charity. At 2:15pm Friday, live from Rome, is the Prayer Vigil in Honor of Mother Teresa. At 8pm Friday is Mother Teresa: The Legacy (re-airs 3pm Sunday).  At 3am Saturday, live from Rome, is the Jubilee for Volunteers and Catechesis on Mother Teresa. Catholic University of America: Mass of the Holy Spirit

EWTN Deus Lux Mea Est (“God Is My Light”) is the motto of The Catholic University of America, a pontifical university that the U.S. bishops founded in 1887 with the approval of Pope Leo XIII. This opening Mass of the academic year will take place in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. Re-airs at midnight.
