Dublin’s 1932 International Eucharistic Congress: A Look Back

EWTN On the eve of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress, beginning in Dublin June 10, this documentary recalls the 31st International Eucharistic Congress, held in Dublin in 1932 to coincide with the 1,500th anniversary of St. Patrick’s landing in Ireland. The climactic Mass in Phoenix Park featured the ringing of St. Patrick’s actual bell, the famed Irish tenor John McCormack sang Panis Angelicus, and, via radio, Pope Pius XI gave his blessing to the people of “our beloved Ireland.” Re-airing at 6:30am Sunday.

TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES On the 90th birthday of Judy Garland (1922-1969), the 1990 documentary The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: 50 Years of Magic, at 7pm, shows how MGM created the movie that was Miss Garland’s biggest success, 1939’s The Wizard of Oz. Following at 8pm is the family film classic itself. (TV-G).

ALL WEEK, June 10-17 Dublin’s 2012 International Eucharistic Congress

EWTN Follow the opening and closing Masses of this 50th International Eucharistic Congress, plus updates all week; times to be announced. Pope Benedict XVI’s legate to the Congress will be Quebec Cardinal Marc Ouellet, who heads the Holy See’s Congregation for Bishops. The closing Mass will be held at Dublin’s historic Croke Park Stadium, “Home of Gaelic Games.”

EWTN Blessed Pope John Paul II decreed that every year on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus the Church would hold a World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of the Clergy. From Our Lady of the Angels Chapel, EWTN will take part in this observance by leading Catholics everywhere in praying the Rosary for priests.
