Most Holy Mother of God Catholic Church

EWTN In 1992, after the fall of the USSR, American Fathers Myron Effing and Daniel Mauer, founders of the Canons Regular of Jesus the Lord, came to Vladivostok, the big Russian port on the Sea of Japan, to re-establish the Church there amid social disintegration caused by seven decades of atheistic, communist persecution and misrule. Now, 11 parishes and many charities are rekindling the faith.
 

American Experience: The Forgotten Plague

PBS In the 19th century, tuberculosis, or consumption, as it was known, took countless lives. Discovery of the TB bacillus in 1892 prompted public-health campaigns. A combination of streptomycin, which was discovered in 1943, and other antibiotics finally proved effective against TB.
 

Nova: Building Wonders

PBS On Feb. 11, in “Colosseum: Roman Death Trap,” archaeologists and engineers build a system to replicate the arena’s workings. On Feb. 18, in “Petra: Lost City of Stone,” a team studies the system that brought water to that remote city in present-day Jordan. On Feb. 25, in “Hagia Sophia: Istanbul’s Ancient Mystery,” architects reveal design secrets that have preserved the 1,500-year-old structure.
 

The Way of the Cross for Kids

EWTN In this animated show, four children follow Jesus along the 14 Stations of his passion and death. TV-Y (okay for kids). Also airs at 4pm on Feb. 27 and March 6 and at 3pm on March 13 and 20.
 

Pope Francis Creates New Cardinals

EWTN At 5am Saturday, the Holy Father will hold the Ordinary Public Consistory for the Creation of New Cardinals. Re-airs at noon. At 4am Sunday, His Holiness will preside at the Eucharistic Concelebration With the New Cardinals. Re-airs at 11:30am.
 

Crossing the Goal

EWTN This episode’s topic is “Living the Our Father: Lead Us Not Into Temptation.” Re-airs 6:30am Monday and 10:30pm Thursday.
 

Ash Wednesday

EWTN At 8am in Our Lady of the Angels Chapel in Irondale, Ala., the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word celebrate Mass. Re-airs at 6:30pm. At 10:30am, Pope Francis will preside over the Stational Prayers and Penitential Procession and will celebrate Mass With the Blessing and Imposition of the Ashes. Re-airs at midnight.
 

The Greatest Story Ever Told

TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES This reverent 1965 epic, directed by George Stevens, was based on a 1949 novel of the same title by Fulton Oursler (1893-1952), a convert who also wrote Why I Know There Is a God (1950). Max von Sydow portrays Jesus.
