Most Holy Mother of God Catholic Church

EWTN In 1992, after the fall of the USSR, American Fathers Myron Effing and Daniel Mauer, founders of the Canons Regular of Jesus the Lord, came to Vladivostok, the big Russian port on the Sea of Japan, to re-establish the Church there amid social disintegration caused by seven decades of atheistic, communist persecution and misrule. Now, 11 parishes and many charities are rekindling the faith.

American Experience: The Forgotten Plague

PBS In the 19th century, tuberculosis, or consumption, as it was known, took countless lives. Discovery of the TB bacillus in 1892 prompted public-health campaigns. A combination of streptomycin, which was discovered in 1943, and other antibiotics finally proved effective against TB.

Nova: Building Wonders

PBS On Feb. 11, in “Colosseum: Roman Death Trap,” archaeologists and engineers build a system to replicate the arena’s workings. On Feb. 18, in “Petra: Lost City of Stone,” a team studies the system that brought water to that remote city in present-day Jordan. On Feb. 25, in “Hagia Sophia: Istanbul’s Ancient Mystery,” architects reveal design secrets that have preserved the 1,500-year-old structure.
