Parish Priest of Majdanek: About Saint Omelian Kovch

EWTN “Apart from heaven, this is the one place where I wish to remain,” Greek Catholic Father Omelian Kovch (1884-1944), a Ukrainian, wrote his family from the Nazi concentration camp Majdanek in Poland in 1943. “Of all these here I am the only priest. … I help them to cross over this little bridge into eternity.” The Nazis tortured, imprisoned and martyred him for having saved hundreds of Polish Jews from persecution by baptizing them at their request. Father Kovch died on March 25, 1944. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 2001; the word “Saint” in the film’s title is honorific at present.
