Train Up a Child

For optimal outcomes, accept no substitute for traditional parenting.

A new British study shows that kids brought up with traditional parenting methods are more stable socially, emotionally and academically than children raised in a setting of “good enough” parenting. The researchers, from the Institute of Education in London, defined the latter as situations in which young children are neither closely supervised nor actively challenged to learn. Traditional parenting consists of judicious discipline, high expectations, emotional engagement and other “old-fashioned” notions and practices. Who knew? Kevin Bedan illustration
