Marriage provides a far more stable environment for childrearing than cohabitation. A recent study in Britain showed that, in 2003, close to three times more cohabitants broke up than their married counterparts (88,000 vs. 31,000). What’s more, unmarried parents are five times more likely to break up than married parents, according to the authors of the research.
