Seven-month-old infants can’t speak, much less solve addition and subtraction equations. But a new study seems to show that babies have an inherent sense of numbers. Neuroscientists Kerry Jordan and Elizabeth Brannon concluded from a number of experiments that babies show “an internal representation of ‘two-ness’ or ‘three-ness’ that … reflects an abstract internal process.” The report on their findings appears in the Feb. 13 issue of Proceedings of the National Academies of Science.
