The mainstream media has made much of a new study showing that the majority of American women, 51%, are now living without a husband. But observers have shown that the numbers were skewed by the survey’s odd methodology and that, in any case, the trend toward singlehood as a permanent state may have peaked. One example: The University of Michigan’s “Monitoring the Future” survey recently found that some 82% of 12th-grade girls consider having a good marriage and family life as “extremely important” to them. And an even higher percentage say they expect to marry.
