In the Register ...

We go to press on Mondays at the Register, and the March for Life is usually on a Monday. So we are often tempted in late January to make something else our lead story.

After all, by the time you see it, a journalist might say it is old news.

But the way we look at it, it isn’t old news if we’re the only ones who are reporting it.

There’s no other march on Washington that attracts anywhere near the numbers that the March for Life does, year in and year out. However, you wouldn’t know that if you watched the secular news.

A couple of Washington rallies for causes have matched its numbers. The Million Man March didn’t meet its own stated goal, but had a big showing.

Following that success, the Million Mom March against gun violence did very well, too. But every year, on what often turns out to be the nastiest day of the year, in terms of weather, 100,000 or more men, women and children march on Washington to mark the anniversary of Roe v. Wade by protesting against the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in all nine months of pregnancy for any reason.

So, each year we always end up making the same decision: Lead with the March for Life. After all, what’s the Register for, if it isn’t to report a story this big that’s being so systematically ignored?

Father Owen will be meeting Register Sponsors in Florida, Feb. 1-10. For information, call Michael Lambert at (800) 356 9916.
