In this issue, we look back on the events that helped shape the Register’s coverage in 2012.

Amid the most tumultuous events and issues in the news — such as the unspeakable tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., Hurricane Sandy, disunity among Catholics over Church teaching, the attempts to redefine marriage in the U.S. and abroad, and continued persecution of Christians in the Middle East, Africa and Asia — the Church has stood out as a beacon of hope.

Highlights of this year also show enthusiastic defense and promotion of our Catholic faith: We have seen unity demonstrated among Catholics — clergy, laypeople, colleges, organizations (including EWTN) and companies — in their opposition to the federal contraception mandate; Pope Benedict’s inauguration of a Year of Faith, which coincided with the anniversaries of the Second Vatican Council (50th) and the Catechism of the Catholic Church (20th); the Synod of Bishops on the New Evangelization; and the Fortnight for Freedom.

Scripture says, "Hope does not disappoint," and I want to assure you of the Register’s continued commitment to reflect in our pages during 2013 the Church’s timeless message of hope.
