Georgetown Nix

INSIDEHIGHERED.COM, April 6 — The Georgetown University Law Center has refused to fund a first-year law student’s summer internship at Planned Parenthood. The student, Jenny Woodson, complained to Insidehighered.com that the law center discriminated unfairly against her summer internship at the abortion organization because Georgetown funds internships at organizations that advance other causes that conflict with Church teachings. But Daniel Hughes, president of the student group Progressive Alliance for Life, said Georgetown acted appropriately. “I don’t think Georgetown needs to enact Catholic doctrine on every issue — that wouldn’t be desirable,” he said. “But the most bedrock Catholic teaching is the protection of life. No advocacy group that works against that principle should be supported by the university.”

Catholic Debate

BOSTON COLLEGE, April 4 — Catholic U.S. Senators and presidential candidates Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., and Sam Brownback, R-Kan., will discuss the intersection of religion and politics at an April 23 debate at Boston College. The debate, titled “Catholic Senators and Presidential Candidates: Their Faith and Public Policy,” will be moderated by Tim Russert, host of NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Faithful Teens

PITTSBURGH CATHOLIC, April 6 — More than 1,300 Pittsburgh-area Catholic teens attended the Hosanna 2007 celebration at Duquesne University April 1. The gathering, which coincided with the World Youth Day celebration in Rome, encouraged local youth to live out their faith. Said 14-year-old David Matis, “I didn’t know there were this many people my age who were as excited about being Catholic as I am.”
