CARDINAL NEWMAN SOCIETY, March 16 — The society’s review of Catholic college and university websites has revealed links and referrals to abortion clinics, including Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion and pro-contraception groups.

Whether it’s internship and job placements with abortion-rights groups, health center referrals to Planned Parenthood or general “resource” information, the links are available at the websites of Boston College, DePaul University, Dominican University of California, Georgetown University, Loyola University of Chicago, Loyola University of New Orleans, Our Lady of the Lake University, Santa Clara University, Seton Hall University and the University of Detroit Mercy.

The College of St. Catherine in Minnesota posts online information encouraging students to use contraceptives and abortifacient devices.

Among the Best

THOMAS AQUINAS COLLEGE, March 16 — Thomas Aquinas College is one of only four Catholic colleges to make The New York Times’ list of the best 106 national colleges and universities based on the caliber of their entering freshmen.

In a recent special issue focused on education, The Times chose to consider institutions that “admit the country’s best students,” namely, those at which 25% or more of entering freshmen receive 700 or more points on either the math or verbal SAT and place in the top 10% of their high school graduating classes.

The other Catholic institutions to make The Times’ list were Georgetown University, Boston College and the University of Notre Dame.

Big Money Marches

THE CATO INSTITUTE, March 15 — In a widely distributed column, the institute’s Neal McCluskey echoed and expanded upon an opinion piece written last month by Sports Illustrated’s Frank DeFord that deplored the relative absence of Catholic and other private colleges from the top ranks of intercollegiate sports.

Wrote DeFord: “Even the richest Catholic colleges have trouble competing for the best players when the big-time public schools can offer state-of-the-art facilities, special team dorms, even chartered game flights.”

Added McCluskey: “The true devils of college sports … are the mammoth state universities that steal from the taxpayers to achieve dominance on the field and in the process drive small schools — and the fun — out of college sports.”

Target: Christians

THE JACKSON SUN, March 17 — Soulforce, a pro-homosexual group, is on a 51-day bus tour of private Christian colleges and military academies where, organizers say, school officials engage in “religion-based discrimination,” the Tennessee newspaper reported.

Protesters provoked reaction by engaging public displays of homosexual affection in violation of campus codes of conduct.

While trespassing charges were filed at some colleges, the demonstrations provoked little reaction at others.

Gruesome Babies?

HARVARD CRIMSON, March 10 — An editorial in the undergraduate daily charged that a pro-life poster campaign showing the early stages of fetal development “happens to misrepresent the pro-choice members of this campus as bloodthirsty baby killers.”

Meghan Grizzle, president of Harvard Right to Life, countered: “Apparently people find the picture of a fetus gruesome. … We’re not showing pictures of an aborted fetus or a dead baby.”

The posters have been ripped down by outraged pro-abortion students almost as fast as they are put up.
