National Marriage at Stake In New Jersey
New Jersey’s Supreme Court ruled that the state’s legislators must guarantee equal marriage rights for same-sex couples.

TRENTON, N.J.
— New Jersey’s
Supreme Court said homosexual couples are entitled to the same legal rights as
married heterosexual couples.
The ruling could make New Jersey
the second state, after Massachusetts,
to legalize same-sex “marriage.” The court ruled 4-3 Oct. 25 that the state’s
constitutional guarantee of equal rights applies to homosexual couples.
But it fell short of ordering
legislators to permit same-sex “marriage.” Rather, the court is giving the
