It was in 1992 that Father Myron Effing and Father
Daniel Maurer arrived in the port city of Vladivostok, Russia, on the Sea of
Japan near the Chinese border. Just a few years prior, the city’s name was
synonymous with Soviet military might: It was the main naval base of the Soviet
Union’s Pacific fleet.
