The encyclical Ecclesiae de Eucharistia (On the Eucharist in Its Relationship to the Church) by Pope John Paul II at vatican.va/edocs/ ENG0821/_INDEX.HTM contains a wealth of reflection-worthy thoughts for this year. While at work or at home, you can make a virtual and spiritual communion with our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament through your computer. BY Brother John Raymond With all this thinking about how best to manage money, I think we should now turn our attention to the best part: how — and where — to give it. Here are some of my favorite charitable organizations: The Catholic Worker (catholicworker.org) needs money donations, as well as warm winter clothing and blankets for the homeless. The Catholic Medical Mission Board (cmmb.org) sends medicines, doctors and nurses to Third World countries that lack medical care. The good works of the Selesian Missions of Don Bosco (salesiansmissions.org) are too numerous to itemize. Particularly impressive: their homes for children living in the streets of South America. Catholic Charities USA (catholiccharities.org) does much that is both commendable and worthy of generous support. The Columban Mission Fathers (columban.org) help the poor and hungry in many places throughout the world. BY Brother John Raymond St. Paul exhorts us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Here are some sites to help us learn how to do that — even when we're online. A good place to start is with Part 4 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church on the Vatican site. It's the definitive statement on Christian prayer. Go to vatican. va/archive/ccc/index.htm. Perhaps you prefer the old Q&A format of the Baltimore Catechism? If so, go to catholic.net/RCC/Cat echism/3/l28.html. Brother Craig here at the monastery, who has a licentiate from the Angelicum in Rome in spiritual theology, has an article on contemplative prayer on our community's website. You'll find it at monksofadoration.org/contempl.html. One of the degrees of contemplation is called the Prayer of Quiet, which you can learn more about in the online 1911 version of the Catholic Encyclopedia at newadvent.org/cathen/12608b. htm. Religious Funds at religious-funds.com has the mission of shedding light on a rather small and unique sector of the financial world — mutual funds. The fund families appearing on their site encourage “socially responsible investing.” Catholic Home Loan at catholichomeloans.com guarantees the lowest interest rates, and part of its profit goes to the charity of your choice. It deals with refinancing, purchases, cash-out and home equity. For advice on family finances, Catholic Answers sells The Catholic Answers Guide to Family Finances, by Register Family Matters columnist Phil Lenahan, at catholic.com/seminars/lenahan.asp. Lenahan, director of media and finance for Catholic Answers, spent years with an international accounting firm and was a financial executive in a Fortune 300 company. So I think he is well qualified to help with family finances. Some might want to look at the “Socially Responsible Investment Guidelines” from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops as a moral guide for their own investments. Released last November, it's now available at usccb.org/finance/srig.htm. Finances can be a major source of family and marital stress. The Center for Peace in the Family at peaceinthefamily.org offers an experienced Catholic counselor to help you sort out these problems. This month we'll look at web-sites related to this issue. “The Fecundity of Marriage” and “The Gift of a Child” are covered in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Nos. 2366 through 2379, at scborromeo.org/ ccc/p3s2c2a6.htm. Humanae Vitae, Pope Paul VI's 1968 encyclical on the regulation of birth, remains a must-read for Catholic couples. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has a number of articles on this issue at usccb.org/prolife/issues/ contraception/index.htm. BY Brother John Raymond Off we go into the world of online monasteries … As mentioned above, St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Mass., is known for its Trappist Preserves jams, jellies and marmalades. You can visit the community that makes the sweet spreads at spencer-abbey.org. Learn about their history, retreat house, and daily schedule, plus find links to other Trappist monasteries. St. Leo Abbey, at saintleoabbey.org, is a Benedictine community near us here in Florida. They have a guesthouse, retreat center, gift shop, newsletter and photos on their Web site. Oh, yes, and they run a university, too (St. Leo University). The Trappist Abbey of Gethsemani, Ky., is well known for one of its members, acclaimed author Thomas Merton. You can visit them online at monks.org and learn of their history, monastic life, retreats, food gifts and bookstore. The Brigittine Monks at the Priory of Our Lady of Consolation in Amity, Ore., revived in 1976 after being extinct largely due to the European wars in the middle of the 19th century. They are known for their hard-to-resist Chocolate Fudge Royale. Go for a virtual visit at brigittine.org. Of course I would be remiss if I didn't mention my own community's Web site — monksofadoration.org. With more than 1,400 pages of information along with photos, games, chapel Webcam, video, audio and more, it will make you feel welcome for hours. BY Brother John Raymond Having just attended a seminar on end-of-life issues, I found it interesting to note that the Hemlock Society has changed its name to “End-of-Life Choices.” As this suicide-advocate group is very active in my home state of Florida, I was inspired to surf the Web for sites that promote life until its natural conclusion. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has some interesting information on euthanasia at usccb.org/prolife/issues/euthanas /index.htm. The Florida Catholic Conference has put together a Web page titled “End-of-Life Decisions” at flacathconf.org/Issuesinfo/ Endoflife/End-of-LifeIndex.htm. It's a good resource for pastors, health care ministers, caregivers and other interested parties. An eye-opening site put together by the National Right to Life Committee, euthanasia.com contains tons of helpful information. The International Task Force on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide at internationaltaskforce.org addresses these issues as well as disability rights, pain control and much more. Citizens United Resisting Euthanasia at cureltd.home.netcom.com is America's oldest network solely devoted to combating euthanasia. Physicians for Compassionate Care at www.pccef.org affirms an ethic based on the principle that all human life is inherently valuable and that the physician's roles are to heal illness, alleviate suffering and provide comfort for the sick and dying. Some parts of the site are still under construction. Hopefully the “Physician Directory” will be up soon so we patients can find good Catholic physicians. The American Catholic Lawyers Association at americancatholiclawyers.org was founded in 1990 and is a nonprofit religious organization dedicated to the defense of the faith and the rights of Catholics in America. Attorneys can join their volunteer network and people can contact them for legal representation. The Catholic Association of Musicians at cammu-sic.com was founded in 1996. Member musicians are interested in a wide variety of Catholic music, from classic liturgical to contemporary entertainment. Signis at www.signis.net was formed in 2001and comprises a vast network of communication professionals. The Vatican officially recognizes it as a Catholic organization for communication. BY Brother John Raymond Let's look at information on the gift of papal infallibility. Why call it a gift? Can't we just believe anything we want? See the following links for the answer. It's always a good idea to start with the Catechism. Look at paragraph No. 890 and following for the different ways the Church proclaims infallibly at scbor-romeo.org/ccc/p 123a9p4.htm. The First Vatican Council proclaimed Papal Infallibility in 1870. To read about this in detail see Session 4, Chapter 4 at piar.hu/councils/ecum20.htm. Catholic Answers addresses misconceptions our separated brothers and sisters in Christ have about the doctrine at catholic.com/library/ papal_infallibility.asp. The Immaculate Conception was infallibly proclaimed by Blessed Pope Pius IX in 1854. You can read about what he said in proclaiming it at papalencycl icals.net/Pius09/p9ineff.htm. So important to the Church is preserving and guarding the teachings handed down to us by the apostles that the Roman Curia has a Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. A few years ago I met James Adair, the president of Regina Tours, at a conference. Its Web site, regina-tour.com, has helpful information on a number of sites popular with Catholic pilgrims. Hot spots include the shrines of France; Rome, Assisi and Florence; Fatima, Lourdes and Spain; various locales in Ireland; Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico; and the California missions. I met young Catholic travel writer Kevin Wright, president of Catholic Adventures International (catholicadventures.com), at another conference. His company provides guided tours of Europe, North America, the Caribbean and other places. It also offers exclusive opportunities to interact with top Catholic speakers and experts. Dr. Rosalie Turton, whom I have known for a number of years, began the 101 Foundation, named after the 101 tears that Our Lady shed in the approved apparitions in Akita, Japan. Turton makes sure that pilgrims make a pilgrimage and are not just taking a vacation. Her Web site is at 101foundation.com. Bob and Penny Lord are internationally known pilgrimage directors who lead tours to the shrines of Europe, Mexico and North America. Their Web site, Journeys of Faith (bobandpennylord.com), lists a few pilgrimages for 2003. I know nothing about Best Catholic Pilgrimages at eholy.com, but it claims to offer the best pilgrimages at affordable prices, along with a priest or bishop as a spiritual leader. E Real Love Productions, featuring talks given by Mary Beth Bonacci, is at www.reallove.net. Bonacci addresses key issues facing young people and, in fact, all of us, with regard to faith, chastity and our culture. She holds a master's degree in the theology of marriage and family from the John Paul II Institute at Lateran University. E The inspiring 28-page newspaper www.Lovematters.com, aimed primarily at teens and college students, likewise contains helpful and exhortative information useful to grownups as well as adolescents. E Sufferers of pornography addiction will find help and encouragement to break their addiction at the Catholic Support Group for Recovery from Pornography Addiction (CSGPA), located at www.saint-mike.org. You don't need to be a member to read the posts in the message board, but you need to register in order to post. E Enough is Enough at www.enough.org lights the way for protecting children and families from the dangers of illegal pornography and online predators.
