Pope Benedict XVI read a passage from the start of the Book of Genesis on Italian TV today.

The Pope’s reading was the first segment of a week-long, round-the-clock Bible-reading marathon on Italy’s RAI network.

The event is timed to coincide with the first week of the World Synod of Bishops.

The Chinese government won’t allow Catholic bishops to come to this month’s World Synod of Bishops.

Vatican spokesman Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi said today that China has indicated that travel requests for the bishops have been rejected, Reuters reported.

However, bishops from Hong Kong and Macao will be allowed to attend the synod, which begins Sunday.

The Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, will attend the World Synod of Bishops that opens on Sunday in Rome.

The announcement was made by Archbishop Nikola Eterovic, secretary general of the Synod of Bishops.

Pope Benedict XVI has asked Jewish Rabbi Shear-Yashuv Cohen to address next month’s World Synod of Bishops on the Word of God.

Rabbi Cohen, who is the grand rabbi of Haifa, Israel, is the first Jewish spiritual leader invited to speak at a world synod.
