The first meeting of talks between the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei and the Society of St. Pius X will take place in the morning of Monday, Oct. 26, the Vatican announced today.

A full restoration of the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X to union with Rome does not appear imminent, if a recent interview given by the society’s superior general is any guide.

The Vatican’s press office spokesman, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, has responded to allegations by a Swedish television channel that the Vatican knew of Bishop Richard Williamson’s Holocaust-denying comments to the channel before the excommunication of the Society of St. Pius X bishop was lifted in January.

As expected, Pope Benedict XVI has brought the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei under the auspices of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
American Cardinal William Levada, the CDF’s prefect, will replace Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos as president of the commission, which is charged with trying to reconcile the Society of St. Pius X with the Church.
