The recent election of Patriarch Kirill as the new leader of the Russian Orthodox Church has led some analysts to predict that Pope Benedict XVI may soon be invited to visit Moscow.

Pope Benedict XVI sent a goodwill message to mark Patriarch Kirill’s enthronement in Moscow yesterday as head of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The Vatican was represented at the enthronement by a delegation led by Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and Bishop Brian Farrell, the council’s secretary.

The Vatican is sending its two senior ecumenical officials to Sunday’s inauguration ceremony in Moscow of Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill.
Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and Bishop Brian Farrell, will attend the ceremony, the RIA Novosti news service reported.

The Russian Orthodox Church has a new patriarch.
Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk was elected today as the 16th Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia by delegates meeting in Moscow.

News that Metropolitan Kirill was elected Saturday to be the interim leader of the Russian Orthodox Church means that he is now on course to succeed Patriarch Alexei II, whose funeral took place in Moscow today.
Metropolitan Kirill is expected to become the new patriarch in six months time.
