The Catholic League is closely tracking Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code sequel that opens this May. They’ve covered the “historical inaccuracies” angle, the “apologetics booklet” angle, and now, thanks to a priest spy, they say they’ve found a smoking gun proving the movie’s anti-Catholicism.

“Dressed casually, so no one knew he was a priest,” Father Bernard O’Connor “hung out... READ MORE

Catholic Movie Night

Pope's own Catholic movie night, watching the CBS John Paul. (CNS/Vatican)

In the last post, I referred to Hoopes Catholic Movie Night. We have one every week.

The rules are simple: One night a week we watch a mainstream movie that portrays the Catholic faith. That’s it. A priest counts. Rocky Balboa praying counts (but only if there’s a tabernacle in the chapel, which there is in Rocky II. There’s also a priest). Bible movies, implicitly, count.

We try to mix... READ MORE

Catholic 'Poole' vs. Ebert

Henry almost smiles on the new DVD. (Click here for the movie poster frown.)

For the Hoopes family Catholic Movie Night last week, we rented the newly rentable Henry Poole Is Here.

I found it … well, odd. Roger Ebert praised it effusively, though, so I want to go down his list of positives and give each a thumbs up or thumbs down.

Here’s what Ebert says about it: “Henry Poole Is Here achieves something that is uncommonly difficult. It is a spiritual movie with the... READ MORE

CNS/Walden

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is on, without Disney now. What’s not to like for a studio about a series that made $420 million?

MONEY

“The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” cost $180 million to make and raked in $745 million.

“Prince Caspian,” cost $225 million but made only made $420 million.

Via Headline bistro yesterday, we found the Washington Times reporting that as one of the reasons... READ MORE

Last night my wife and I rubbed shoulders with Catholic movie stars Harry Connick, Jr. and Siobhan Fallon Hogan at the premiere of their film “New in Town.”

The film, which opens this Friday, is a romantic comedy set in New Ulm, Minn.  Watching the premiere at the Mall of America, both my wife and I were pleasantly surprised by the respectful tone in which the movie portrayed one of the key... READ MORE

The Real, Catholic ‘Valkyrie’

Tom Cruise in Valkyrie. (CNS)

What’s the major problem with the movie Valkyrie?

Writing in The New American magazine, Selwyn Duke argues that the film’s chief shortcoming is that Tom Cruise doesn’t do justice to the faith and character of the man he portrays, Col. Claus von Stauffenberg.

Von Stauffenberg was the aristocratic Catholic war hero who led the failed 1944 plot, codenamed “Valkyrie,” to kill Adolf Hitler... READ MORE

‘Fireproof’: Babyproof?

What’s not to like about Fireproof? Ask a Catholic father of 10. His letter to the Register raises some harsh questions.

April and I saw the movie Fireproof and appreciated its earnestness. Here on the Daily Blog, I agreed with Matthew Lickona‘s refusal to harp on its quality issues.

“Disappointed in Oregon” has a different approach:

“I found Fireproof entertaining, but also the same old... READ MORE
